don’t think

You mustn’t want, you must be receptive; don’t think, even, the brain’s a bit dangerous. Sensitivity is the flavor of moments. Henri Cartier-Bresson

All photographs demarcate their own period in time. You must not disregard the first image you ever made for future photographs. Every image you have made is relevant and important in your development. You must also remember that, as in life, the choices you make will determine your future as a photographer. Every decision you make-from…

. a little bit of summer

“One must maintain a little bittle of summer, even in the middle of winter.”
― Henry David Thoreau

Although we had no say in it…
…we all enjoyed the last few days of warm weather even in the overwhelming moments of illness in the family.
It’s very characteristic for this time of year here. I don’t know what I would do if we didn’t have days like this after the cold and rainy days.

the ripple of water

Water Lily by Rainer Maria Rilke

My whole life is mine, but whoever says so
will deprive me, for it is infinite.
The ripple of water, the shade of the sky
are mine; it is still the same, my life.

No desire opens me: I am full,
I never close myself with a refusal-
in the rhythm of my daily soul
I do not desire-I am moved;

by being moved I exert my empire,
making the dreams of night real:
into my body at the bottom of the water
I attract…

memories: the last day of kindergarten

Thanks to an amazing group of moms, Merrik’s last day of Kindergarten at Concordia didn’t have to end as sad as it started. He was so sad about his last day of school he was sick to his stomach. But by the end of the day, he was realizing the joys of summer.

Carrie, Abby, and Tiffany starting scoping out a fire pit at T-Street at 6:00am. When they arrived they found that most had already been taken except the…

photography is [the rhythm of life]

We’ve been really out of rhythm it seems for the last month or so-at least since we went camping in December. December was an amazing month where we spent time together as a family because Jim was on sabbatical. He dropped off and picked up Merrik from school, kept the house impeccably clean and helped with errands. When January came it was hard to get back to the grind.

We are usually in the mode of going to the beach…

[photography is] my kindergartener

Merrik starts Kindergarten soon. I can’t believe it has already come time. Jim and I felt like it was such a long way off. I look at Merrik and still see the cute little baby boy that he has been for the past 5 years. All of a sudden he is a boy, a kid, a lad, a youngster, a youth. And he talks back now. Boy does he talk back. But when I see him loving life so…

[photography is] no photos

The biggest problem I have with hanging out in the surf with my kiddos is that I don’t get any pictures of us hanging out together in the ocean. I’ve tried the waterproof camera but I always end up preferring to not take it in with me-especially if I am swimming with both Merrik and Maliea. It’s enough to manage both of them in the ocean that I don’t need one more thing to hold on to and keep…

winter beach days

My favorite time of year to go to the beach is the winter. There are no people on the beach but there are always surfers out and sometimes hearty kids playing in the waves at the shore. We are so lucky to live in such a beautiful place where we can enjoy the ocean year round.
